America's Top Killer: Us

Dr. Matt's Comments:

The following article describes what the chiropractic profession has been teaching for over a century now... True healing only comes from within and when we make poor lifestyle choices we choose to interfere with the body's intelligent design of healing.

Newsweek Article
America’s Top Killer: Us

A new study argues our personal choices cause more than 1 million premature deaths a year. What, if anything, should the government do to protect us from ourselves?

Tony Dokoupil -- Newsweek Web Exclusive
Jan 2, 2009 Updated: 4:14 p.m. ET Jan 2, 2009

With the dawn of a new and potentially difficult year upon us, many Americans will swear that this is the year that they'll eat better, exercise more, or quit smoking. Of course, most of us will fail to stick to these healthy resolutions. And, while we know that getting in shape is good for us, a new study shows the true cost of our tendency not to make wise decisions about taking care of ourselves. According to Duke University's Ralph Keeney, whose work was published last month in the journal Operations Research, America's top killer isn't cancer or heart disease, or even smoking and overeating—it's our inability to make smart choices that leads us to engage in those and other self-destructive behaviors.

"Each year more than a million people needlessly die because of their own personal decisions," says Keeney, whose work gives new meaning to the cliché we're our "own worst enemies." That means more than half the population will make a decision leading to an early grave, he reports, including a full 55 percent of people who die between the ages of 15 and 64. Most alarming, that figure has jumped fourfold since 1900, despite the world becoming a safer place overall thanks to seat belts, smoking laws, health food and a host of other tools to help people stay inside the lines.
Keeney's work raises a philosophical quandary: If we continue to kill ourselves with poor decisions, are we consciously opting for short, zestful lives over long, abstemious ones? Or is it that we simply need a stronger hand prodding us to make better choices? Keeney and a number of public-health advocates say the answer may be more governmental guidance in everything from what kind of food we buy to whether we contribute to our retirement savings. And if Keeney is right, and much of our health and life expectancy is a reflection of our own decisions, are these things we can change or choices shaped by genes and other forces outside our control?

To generate his numbers, Keeney took national death statistics from 2000 and tried to trace the official cause of each death (ranging from cancers, diabetes and AIDS to fatal accidents, suicides and homicides) back to some personal call, such as the decision to smoke, drink, drive without a seat belt or have unprotected sex. Because the numbers can't show for sure that a person's smoking, for instance, caused their lung cancer, he used risk data to make reliable guesses—smoking is known to triple the risk of cancer, for example, which lead Keeney to conclude that roughly two thirds of all smokers who got lung cancer brought it upon themselves.

That's not so controversial when identifying three packs a day as the cause of cancer or the choice to speed as the cause of a fatal crash, but Keeney is on thinner ice when counting all suicides as examples of death by personal decision. His reasoning: the decision to kill oneself may not be rational, or even clearheaded, but it's definitely personal. But with evidence accumulating that many mental illnesses have genetic or physiological origins, labeling the suicidal impulses of someone suffering from major depression or bipolar disorder a "choice" may not be exactly fair.

The same goes for certain addictions to drinking, smoking and overeating, which all have significant genetic triggers—yet Keeney holds firm. "Prior to having these habits," he writes, "the individuals made decisions that lead to [them] and these are the personal decisions that are of concern in this paper."

Another of the study's limitations: it ignores the environmental baggage that constrains people's choices. Keeney says he appreciates the importance of peer pressure, poverty and education as well as the fact that fatal decisions aren't necessarily "bad" ones. (Yes, you end up dead but perhaps you had no real choice and were speeding to escape a murderer. Or perhaps you made a conscious choice to live an interesting life, burning out early like Elvis rather keeping to a rigid fitness routine like Jack LaLanne.) It's just that in most cases, he says, people could have reasonably saved their own lives if they had taken a different path. "If it's under a person's control," he tells NEWSWEEK, "I say it's up to them."

Why do so many of us make lousy personal decisions, even ones that kill us? Keeney, for one, chalks it up to short-term thinking and it-can't-happen-to-me exceptionalism. Other scholars, such as Harvard's Cass Sunstein, University of Chicago's Richard Thaler and MIT's Dan Ariely—all loosely organized, like Keeney, under the suddenly hip banner of behavioral economics—have in recent years come up with different reasons for why we sometimes act a fool. Topping their lists are apathy, peer pressure, and the tendency to misperceive in predictable ways—such as judging a mountain of food a molehill if it's served on a massive plate.

However the experts explain our tendencies to self-destruct, they all agree that we could use some help negotiating these choices better—and that government can provide it. For Keeney, it's by adding "decision making" to the standard curriculum in public schools so that more children grow up empowered to recognize and mine all their options, rather than accept those presented by others. "Imagine if they taught World War II as decision making," he says. "That'd be fabulous."

For Sunstein and Thaler, authors of the recent book "Nudge" (Yale, 2008), it's through gently pushing people to make the right move. "Putting the fruit at eye level counts as a nudge," they write. "Banning junk food does not." Ariely cottons to a middle ground between authoritarianism and "complete freedom to fail." In the realm of preventive medicine, for instance, that means encouraging people to go for regular screenings and checkups by establishing a deposit system: the only way to get your $100 back is by making your appointment.

Will any of this actually happen? Brian Wansink thinks so, although he's short on specifics. In "Mindless Eating," his 2007 book about how the brain decides what the stomach gets, the Cornell University marketing professor imagines a tomorrow where regulators promote healthier habits by borrowing the seductions of junk food and leveraging insights into portion control. In one of his more famous experiments, he gives people bowls of soup that were secretly refilled by a tube beneath the restaurant table and discovers that those people with bottomless bowls ate almost 75 percent more than people with normal bowls. "How could I feel full? I've still got half a bowl left," the overeaters wondered. The lesson: tinkering with perception is the key to changing long-term behaviors and, according to Wansink, adding years and quality to our lives. The 19th century was the century of hygiene, he writes, and the 20th was the century of medicine. The 21st? The century of behavior change—with Uncle Sam perhaps leading the charge.

If playing with our perception doesn't work, perhaps manipulating our wallets might. Or at least that's what some cash-strapped state governments are banking on. Last week New York Health Commissioner Richard Daines created a five-minute YouTube video to promote a proposed 18 percent sales tax on sugary drinks in the Empire State. Daines justified the move saying that some taxes can be good for your health.

Still, a more interventionist government isn't up everyone's alley. Not to mention the fact that we learn by making mistakes. If there's always a guardrail in place, we may never remember to watch the ledge.

Back on Track- Principle of True Healing Part 3

ENERGIZE YOUR EXERCISE

Goal: Improve oxygen levels, fuel the brain with proprioception (movement sensation), create incredible strength, speed, balance, & coordination, reduce injuries, improve posture & immune levels, while burning through fat & getting ripped in just minutes a day. Sound good…then enter into the world of Maximized Living.

Human Growth Hormone: The Natural Anti-Aging Element: No Supplements Required

Renowned for its ability to stimulate muscle development, bone growth, & fuel immune activity while switching your body into a potent fat burner. Growth hormone is secreted in abundant amounts when certain conditions are present such as a pure & sufficient body free of neurotoxic sludge, an optimal functioning nervous system, alkaline diet, low stress, & good sleeping habits

Surge Training: By far, engaging in short time period, high intensity exercise is the most potent way to stimulate a large HGH response.

Burst Essentials: (Cycling, walking hills, run-walk, elliptical, swimming, rowing, etc.)
1. Warm-Up: Begin with a 5-10 minute light warm-up (walking, jogging, etc.)
2. SURGE A 20 second intense surge…followed by a 20 second light movement period
3 reps through and then a 2 minute light movement period
3 sets of this same circuit = 3 total minutes of high-intensity training
5. Cool-Down: 5-10 minutes of light activity

Resistance Training: 10 - 20 minutes – high intensity

1. Go Big: Build Muscle & Burn Fat: Large muscle group exercises give the best hormonal response: (push-ups, pull-ups, dips, squats, lunges, deadlifts, bent-over rows). Ladies – don't worry – you won't get muscle bound, you'll have the ideal tone you want.

2. Compound Sets: Balance your muscle groups:
Do an exercise for the front of your body (push-up) – immediately counter with an exercise for the back of your body (bent-over row)

3. Short-Rest Periods: Creates the high-intensity release of hormonal factors that will build muscle & bone, while blasting through fat.

Functional Fitness: Create the balance, coordination & skill to live at a higher level

1. Core-Stability Training: Incorporate resistance training exercises that challenge your core (the movement center of your body) in a balanced, dynamic fashion

2. Balance Training: Feed your brain with rampant amounts of proprioception while creating powerful ankles, knees, & hips that are resistant to sprains, strains, awkward falls & landings.

3. Posture Perfect: Improve your spinal integrity, breathing dynamics, & energy levels with specific neurological exercises to correct dangerous posture & nervous system dysfunctions such as forward head posture & loss of cervical curve.

Graduation

I recently graduated valedictorian of my class. My wife and I were fortunate enough to be able to have our very close friends and family present to celebrate to occasion. I used the opportunity to share a story to help illustrate how we are tempted daily into rationalizing our health away. This is a great excerpt from a recent sermon I heard from Northland Church out of Longwood, FL by pastor Vernon Rainwater.

How Satan Temps Us
Pastor Vernon Rainwater

The temptations of satan are not always obvious to our conscious mind. Satan would be easy to avoid if every time he tried to tempt us he appeared in his little red suit with a three-pronged pitch fork. Unfortunately, this is not how it works. Satan doesn’t care how he gets us, he just wants to get us.
Remember the story of Adam and Eve where satan is tempting Eve to eat the forbidden fruit. Eve says she was instructed by God not to eat from the tree or she would die. Genesis 3 states “ Surely Eve, you will not die if you eat this fruit, but in fact you will become like God.” Satan does just enough to get Eve to cross the boundary stating that there is nothing wrong with eating fruit, surely this particular fruit can be no different. It was at this very moment that Jesus began his journey to the cross.
Satan will use things that don’t even seem THAT bad to get us. Was there anything wrong with the fruit? No, but it was commanded by God not to eat it. And we do the same things in our lives everyday.

Here’s a twist on the age old Bible story of Genesis 1:1 to help illustrate the point:
In the beginning God created the Heavens and the Earth and he populated the Earth with broccoli, spinach, green and yellow vegetables and fruits of all kinds so that man and woman would live long and healthy lives.
Then, using God’s great gifts satan created Ben & Jerry’s ice cream and Krispy Kreme Donuts…and satan said “You want chocolate with that?” And man said yes and woman said as long as you’re at it, add some sprinkles.
AND THEY GAINED 10 lbs….and satan smiled.
Then God said “Try my fresh garden salad.” And satan presented thousand-island dressing, buttery croutons, and bacon-bits with Garlic toast on the side. And man and woman unfastened their belts following the repast.
Then God said “I have sent you heart healthy vegetables and olive oil in which to cook them. And satan brought forth deep fried fish and chicken fried steak so big that it needed its own platter. And man gained more weight and his cholesterol went through the roof.
Then God created a white fluffy food named Angel Cake and said “It is good.” And then satan created chocolate cake and named it “Devil’s Cake.”
So then God brought forth running shoes so his children might lose those extra pounds. But Satan gave them cable TV with remote controls so man would not have to toil with getting up and changing the channels. Man and woman laughed and cried before the flickering blue light, and yes….continued to gain pounds.
Then God put forth the potato naturally low-in-fat and brimming with nutrition. Satan cut off the healthful skin and sliced the starchy center into chips and deep-fried them.
And then God gave them lean beef and Satan said “You do want fries with that?” And man replied “Yes, super-sized!” And satan said “It is good!”
And then Man went into cardiac arrest. God sighed and created quadruple bypass surgery. And then Satan created HMO’s.

The nature of your Enemy is that he doesn’t care HOW he gets you. He just wants to get you. And usually he will get you by adding to the things that God has already said are good.

Commentary:
Pastor Hal Haller from my church has a friend named Orly that has two kids and a wife and was just recently diagnosed with primary brain cancer with a prognosis of 7 months to live. Unfortunately, Orly has had this brain cancer developing for at least 7-9 YEARS before it was even able to be diagnosed. Two weeks before being diagnosed he was at Disney with his family enjoying a vacation. The week after they got back to "normal" life he started having blurred vision, weakness in his right arm, and headaches. After going to the doctor, he was diagnosed with the brain cancer.
HOW MUCH DID THIS CHANGE THE LIFE OF HIS FAMILY???
I'm sure it's hard for any of us to imagine the circumstances, but the reality is that this could happen to any one of us at any moment.
How much would Orly's family pay to get this removed if they could? ANYTHING!!!
Would they take out a 2nd mortgage on their house to cover expenses? OF COURSE!!!
Would they fly/drive across the country to get this treated? ABSOLUTELY!!!
Literally, they would do WHATEVER it took and so would you if you were put in the same situation.
So, WHY DON'T WE DO THE SAME TO PREVENT THESE THINGS IN THE FIRST PLACE??
Like I said earlier, cancer is constantly developing in our bodies and takes at least 7-9 years before it is "detectable." Most of us have strong enough immune systems to fight it off and keep the cancer cells from reproducing, therefore making the cancer "undectable" and not able to be diagnosed. However, if we are not living our lives the way God intended and not treating our bodies like the temple of God, we make ourselves more susceptible to degenerative disease such as cancer and heart disease.
Make the committment to yourself and your family to make a positive change for your health this holiday season. God will honor your decision.
With Love,
Dr. Matt

Thimerosal not Harmful....Think AGAIN!!!

For those of you that do not yet know the dangers of thimerosal you MUST check out this video. I've been saying for years that thimerosal in vaccines is dangerous and destroys brain tissue. Research was done at the University of Calgary and they show the results about thimerosal and its damaging effects on this video. Thimerosal is mercury that has aluminum added to it and is used as a preservative in almost ALL vaccines. When aluminum is added to the mercury it compounds the effects of the mercury by almost 400X.

Don't miss out on this precious gem of research. Tell all your loved ones not to get vaccinated until they have seriously researched the effects. If they do not know where to turn. Tell them to email me and I will point them to some great information that helps to show how God never intended for these harmful chemicals to enter our bodies.

THE POWER THAT MADE THE BODY HEALS THE BODY!!!

The Principle of True Healing Part II of IV

In order for your body to heal and function properly it MUST be communicating with the brain without any interference in the nervous system. I recently did a backpack safety talk to a class of second graders and the first question I posed was "What organ controls all funtions in the body?" It didn't take long before every hand in the room was up because they ALL knew the answer....the BRAIN!!!
However, as we get older we tend to forget this obvious truth because of the bombardment of lies from the current medical model that tells us that we can only achieve health by taking the latest pill, vaccination, or doing the latest diet or exercise plan. This is simply NOT true. God put all the information in our brain for our body to heal properly and as long as that information is not interfered with somewhere down the line, then our body will heal and function the way that it was designed.
Let me explain. In order for your brain to communicate with your organs, muscles, skin, eyes, etc. it must send messages back and forth through the nervous system. Our nervous system is composed of the spinal cord and the nerves that come from the spinal cord. These nerves that come out of the spinal cord connect to every organ, tissue, and cell in our entire body. Our nervous system is so fragile and delicate that it must be protected. In fact, the only two organs in our entire body that are completely encased in a hard covering (bone) are the brain and the spinal cord. As long as there is no damage to the nervous system, then the brain can communicate its messages properly and the body will function and heal optimally.
Here's the kicker:
The bones of the spine are individual, moveable segments. Therefore, if moved out of there proper position, those bones can put a damaging pressure on that delicate nervous tissue. That pressure on the nervous system is termed SUBLUXATION. Subluxation is a damaging, degenerative condition of the nervous system that interferes with the brain-body connection. If left uncorrected, subluxation can begin to shut down the nervous system energy to the organs, tissues, and cells of the body.
For example, if subluxation was found to be putting pressure on the nerve that goes to your heart, your heart would not be functioning properly. You may have heart arrythmias, murmurs, or a rapid heart beat as the first signs/symptoms. However, if that subluxation is not corrected for years then the interference will begin to destroy the cells of the heart and cause the heart to begin to malfunction. As the heart malfunctions, heart disease begins to ensue which eventually leads to a heart attack. Heart attacks lead to heart tissue death. Heart tissue death leads to heart failure which will kill you.
That's the seriousness of having a properly working nervous system. This is literally the missing link in health care and disease prevention. The best thing about this philosophy for health and disease prevention is that it is in perfect alignment with Biblical healing (laying of hands) and the principles of health set forth by God.
Tell your friends.
Aligning your health with God's intentions,
Matt

What Would You Do For Your Child?

Today's post is going to be a bit different. Matt is out of town taking his Chiropractic Board Exams so I'm taking the liberty of writing a post from my perspective. Instead of quoting all the scientific facts and research, I"m gonna be a girl, and write from my heart.

Most of you out there will probably agree that if you are a parent or are going to be a parent in the future that you want what is best for your kids. You would agree that there are very few lengths that you wouldn't go to ensure that your kids live a healthy, happy life. You would also agree that you want the best chance for your family to reach it's God-Given potential. And, yet, most of us are not allowing this to happen. Without even realizing it, most children are behind the eight ball before they're even a week old, and they'll never have the opportunity to reach their maximum potential.
For all the frustrating times that we see people not get it; not grasp that they can do something to help their families, something that's non-invansive, affordable, and life-changing, there's a story of families that get it. And, those are the stories that remind me it's possible to make a difference.
Here's one such story. Gary & Lorilee are from Atlanta. They were adopting a baby that was going to be born in Florida. So, when they got the call in the middle of the night, three weeks early, that the bioglogical mom was going into labor, they hopped in the car and made the 6 hour drive to Florida. The baby was born in Ocala, FL on Sunday 11/4/07 (for those of you that don't know, it's up near Gainesville, a good hour and a half from Orlando). Gary & Lorilee have been educated chiropractic patients themselves and wanted their baby adjusted by a principled chiropractor as soon as possible. Since the baby wasn't born in their hometown, they couldn't go to their regular chiropractor. Instead of just waiting a couple of weeks until they got back home, they looked for one that would take care of them right away.

In order to accomplish this, they made the drive to Orlando, to Dr. Erik Lerner's office (where Matt and I are working) so that he could give baby Jonah his first adjustment at just four days old. Now that's someone who gets it. Someone who has trust in one of the best chiropractor's in the world. Someone who knows that through Dr. Erik's adjustment, God will work in baby Jonah's body and will open up the opportunity for him to reach his maximum potential.

Would you do that for your family??
